I met Dave Johnson at Wizard World Chicago last summer. I asked him about commissioning a sketch card, and he agreed to do a sketch, asking that in return I donate something to the Hero Initiative, a great group that helps support comic creators who need help with medical bills or emergency funds. (http://www.heroinitiative.org/) It’s a great program and I was happy to donate.
I talked to Dave kind of late in the day, and we agreed that I’d pick up the card the following day. Well, life being what it is, I wound up getting to the show later than I planned, and with a shorter window than I’d hoped. I never actually met up with Dave that day, but left a note with my info. I figured maybe he’d send it, or at worst, I’d see him at a show next year and get a sketch then.
Well, a couple weeks ago, amongst the Christmas cards, catalogs, and bills, I received this great sketch in the mail. I love the trench coat and the smirk.
Dave’s work is amazing. Great design. Great execution. (http://devilpig.deviantart.com/)
Also, he has an awesome blog about cover design, soooo worth checking out: (http://johnsoncoverhi-lo.blogspot.com/)
